Just about 20 miles from Sarehole, where Tolkien spent the best days of his childhood, there is an ancient settlement consisting of about 400-years old caveish houses carved into a sandstone rock. It is unknown whether these directly inspired Tolkien in shaping the dwelling culture of his invented Hobbits, but the place sure gives a Hobbiton-like impression, and since Tolkien lived nearby, he might have known about it.
