Did you know that we hear 21 characters speaking during Elrond’s council (22 if you count the Ring’s inscription as Sauron’s talk), either directly or reportedly within other character’s speech (mostly Gandalf’s)? To clarify it, I know that many of them are not directly present, but still their talk is quoted there. I’ve just counted them.
Here’s the list in alphabetical order:
Aragorn
Bilbo
Boromir
Butterbur
Dáin
Denethor
Elrond
Erestor
Frodo
Gaffer Gamgee
Gandalf
Gildor
Glorfindel
Glóin
Gwaihir
Isildur
Legolas
messenger of Mordor
Radagast
(Ring’s inscription)
Sam
Saruman
They were not all physically present, but we hear a piece of their talk within this chapter, even if just second-hand through the talk of other characters. In this chapter we encounter the greatest variety of speaker styles and almost each of them has some unique linguistic features that differentiate the person from others.
